The Health and Community Services Workforce Council is proud to take part in the celebrations for Queensland Week, 4 - 13 June.
Queensland Day is held every year on June 6; a date that marks the official separation of Queensland from New South Wales as an independent colony. All Queenslanders are invited to take part in the celebrations and many events being held across the State. View a list of Queensland events at www.queenslandweek.qld.gov.au
This year the week will focus on the community heroes from the State's natural disasters in late 2010 and early 2011, which included floods and Cyclone Yasi. Recognition ceremonies are being held across the state honouring the courageous efforts of the everyday heroes during this disastrous time.
The Workforce Council acknowledges that Queensland communities have experienced significant loss and disruption as a result of natural disasters affecting more than 70% of the state.
Lessons learned through this experience highlight the essential role of the health and community services in supporting the community during disaster events and throughout the recovery period. However, drawing on national and international research, there is a significant risk that the post-disaster response will focus exclusively on recovery and fail to capture the important role of building community resilience through planning.
In recognition of this risk, the Health and Community Services Workforce Council has engaged in a self-funded initiative to develop a Disaster Management Workforce Planning Guide to support non-government health and community services organisations to plan for future disaster events in conjunction with current recovery efforts.
