Working in health and community services provides an opportunity to work in collaboration with communities and build their capacity to develop solutions, work across private and public health community sectors and support the integration of services to work to improve services across all levels and ages. I love the ability to implement change in collaboration with community and continue to hope for greater integration of health and community services.

I have always wanted to work where I contributed to safe patient care and I became interested in sterilisation Services 30 years ago. This specialty science in health is responsible for safely reprocessing reusable medical devices for patient surgical procedures.I love having the knowledge and understanding which gives me confidence to know the reusable medical devices (instruments) used for patient surgical procedures are safely reprocessed to international and national evidence based standards and that I have been involved in developing and implementing these standards and education. In the future I hope that the science continues to evolve both internationally and nationally and these Standards for reusable medical devices are incorporated into Industry education, clinical practice, accreditation and legislation to ensure safe patient outcomes.

19 years in the Health and Community Services

I love and enjoy working with people every day - it is very rewarding although every day is a challenge. I make the dental clients feel welcome and comfortable in the dental surgery. The service that I provide to every patient is exactly what I would do for my own family. I wanted to work for the community in a community-based organisation. And I wanted to make a difference in their life. It is always very rewarding to see them walk away with a smile. I did Year 12 and then I did Certificate 3 in Dental Assisting before getting this job. In the future I hope to continue to serve the community to the best of my ability.

I am passionate about this industry. I love and enjoy working within the aged care and community sectors and have also worked within the disability sector. Knowing that I am contributing to improving quality of life for people gives me job satisfaction and much pleasure in my role. I also really enjoy the hands on approach we have within our organization in providing care and support to our clients and staff and most importantly I also enjoy developing and delivering education and training programs for industry workers and carers throughout the state. I get enormous enjoyment and satisfaction from everything that I do. The bonus for me is the knowledge that I am helping people with dementia and their families and carers to live a better quality life.

  • Stewart GruhlStewart GruhlPatient Support Officer, Patient Support Services Department

5 years in the Health and Community Services

I chose a job in health services because of the security in the job, the aspect of care toward the sick and injured and the amount of people you can meet. I was a qualified landscaper, which had nothing to do with the hospital. I received all of my training in-house. Receiving thanks and gratitude for the service I provide, and also pay day make my job worthwhile. I hope to work my way up the ladder and make a bigger and more important impact on this place. I'm a caring person; I feel I have a lot to give.

  • Heather MummeHeather MummeParamedic (officer in Charge), RN (Registered Nurse), Adjunct Lecturer

20 years in the Health and Community Services

My childhood dream of becoming a paramedic after watching the TV show 'Emergency' came into fruition as an adult due to my clichéd but honest desire to give something back and to be able to make a difference. Through my skills and qualifications as a paramedic and registered nurse, I am now an adjunct lecturer at James Cook University. Getting others interested and motivated in health promotion and disease/injury prevention programmes is gratifying after seeing rural and remote communities benefit from what I have taught students. Going to an accident with the skills and knowledge to decrease someone's pain and make a real difference for their prognosis is one of the things I enjoy most about my job.

Since entering divisions I have also completed a Cert IV in Training & Assessing and a Diploma. Throughout my career I have managed specialists, general practice and psychiatric practices. The thing I love most about my job is helping general practice staff and training medical assistant Cert IV with other members of my team. • Sandie O'KellySandie O'KellyHealth Assessment Facilitator, Self Employed

27 years in the Health and Community Services

By good fortune I was contacted in regards to a position for a good all rounded nurse who could work independently and liaise with GP's and clients and support agencies (ie HACC services etc). I have been involved in teaching operating theatres and community health. What I love most about my job is the community network- spirit of cooperation and real sense of helping each other for the benefit of each client and the stories each client bring. My advice to future colleagues is to be open to chang and grow with your own family and career. Look at opportunities that fulfil your needs- it makes you a happier practitioner. I feel that nursing had gifted me opening in life that have enable me to work and travel across two continents.

The reason I ended up working in my particular role was because it was A natural progression from my previous employment in social welfare and income support work. Working with and for people have always been my personal goal. I have worked in Children Services at both the community and government levels then moved to welfare and income support role with social security. I always targeted areas of work that improve outcomes for people, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. It’s important to stay strong and never lose faith in your work.
